How To Install A Cistern Mechanism

Follow the below basic instructions to install or replace a toilet cistern mechanism. You will see that this is not a particularly complicated or time-consuming task.

The cistern mechanism is the component which draws water from the water outlet and into the toilet when the flush button is pushed. It fills the tank after every flush and prevents water from leaking into the pan.

1. Fill Valve Installation

-  Open the hexagon nut by turning it and place it in the fill valve 'water-in' hole found at the bottom of the cistern tank.

-  Make sure the rubber washer are in the position shown above and screw back the hexagon nut tight. Feel free to use plumbing tape to make sure the seal is waterproof.

-  Open the pin in the fixed ring and push the adjustable rod up to remove it out from the outer float holder, move the fixed ring to adjust the outer float height to your desired water level.
Turn the inner float around the adjustable rod to lower it in position with the outer float. Put the inner float back into the outer float.
Close the pin on the Fixed ring to lock the outer float in place.

-  Drain out all dirty water from the flexi connector and angle valve.
-  Connect the half inch flexi connector to the angle valve and the other end to the fill valve as seen in the photo.
-  Make sure angle valve is closed until installation is complete.

2. Flush Valve Installation

-  Rotate the flush valve body to separate it from the base as shown in the photo.

-  Install the flush valve base into the cistern outlet.
Make sure the black rubber washer in inside of the cistern and use only the white washer plus nut to screw into the base.
-  Feel free to use plumbing tape to make sure the seal is tight and waterproof.

-  Install the flush valve body back into the base again, rotate it slowly until it is firmly secure. Please do not use force or any tools.

-  When moving the green partial flush float from the bottom to the top, the partial flush volume decreases gradually. The adjustable distance is 60mm (2-1/4").

-  When moving the red adjustment button from the bottom to the top, the full flush volume decreases gradually. The adjustable distance is 20mm (13-16").

3. Push Button Installation

-  The distance "L" must be measured carefully as shown in the photo above. This will help cut off the excess length of the rod.

-  After cutting the excess adjustable rod to a preferred length, put the push button into the cistern cover hole.

-  Adjust the direction of the push button to make sure the right button is being activated.

-  Tighten the nut of the push button to secure it.

-  Check all connections again and it all is complete turn back on the angle valve to fill in the cistern with water.

-  Observe and check for leaks.

-  Test out the Full Whole Flush.

-  Observe and check for leaks.

-  Test out the Partial Flush.

-  Observe and check for leaks.

Common Faults and How to Resolve

Fault How to Resolve
No Partial Flush Check if the water level is higher than the partial float. If not the you have to adjust the water level to be higher or adjust the float to be lower.
No flush or very little water after flush is pressed. Check the buttons are not obstructed and you are able to push them down easily. Check the length of the button rod, whether it is too short or long. If yes, than you will have to adjust the rod's length.

Note: It is normal for the water to flow from the cistern for a few seconds after any of the flushes is pressed.
